Janeen Thomas is the founder of Janeen Thomas Law, where she advises businesses, insurers, brokers, and other organizations on complex insurance, litigation, contractual risk, and emerging technology issues.
With more than twenty-three years of experience devoted to the insurance industry, Janeen has built her career helping clients navigate high-stakes legal and business challenges with practical, strategic counsel. Her practice spans insurance coverage analysis, commercial litigation, contractual risk transfer, litigation management, monitoring counsel engagements, insurance product counseling, transactional risk, and artificial intelligence.
Before founding Janeen Thomas Law, Janeen was a Partner at an AmLaw 100 law firm. She has advised sophisticated clients across the country on matters involving commercial general liability, directors and officers liability, professional liability, builder’s risk, property, transactional liability, and representations and warranties insurance, among other complex insurance matters. She has also counseled clients regarding contractual indemnity, additional insured obligations, enterprise risk management, and litigation strategy. This broad experience enables her to provide legal advice that aligns with both business objectives and risk management priorities.
Janeen has represented organizations across numerous industries, including commercial real estate, higher education, energy, hospitality, life sciences, construction, transportation, manufacturing, and professional services. Her clients value her ability to translate complex legal issues into practical business solutions.

Outside the practice of law, Janeen enjoys music, the performing arts, and lifelong learning. A Suzuki-trained violinist, she believes that careful listening, disciplined preparation, and thoughtful collaboration are as essential to effective legal counsel as they are to musical performance. She is also active in her church community and is committed to mentoring the next generation of legal and insurance professionals.

Janeen Thomas has represented insurers, policyholders, insurance brokers, businesses, and other organizations in complex insurance coverage disputes, commercial litigation, contractual risk transfer matters, and strategic advisory engagements across the United States. Her representative experience includes:
- Advised a commercial real estate client with a $2.9 billion portfolio regarding insurance recovery, contractual risk transfer, and litigation strategy.
- Served as lead coverage strategist in consolidated directors and officers liability litigation involving layered insurance programs and multiple parties, preserving the client’s insurance recovery position through successful motion practice.
- Developed litigation strategy in a complex multi-carrier insurance coverage dispute involving progressive property damage, bad faith allegations, and multiple policy periods.
- Counseled corporate clients regarding representations and warranties insurance and insurance due diligence in connection with complex mergers and acquisitions.
- Developed insurance coverage and settlement strategies in matters involving layered insurance programs and eight- and nine-figure exposures.
- Developed and executed revised briefing strategy in a high-exposure insurance coverage dispute after being brought into the matter mid-litigation to strengthen the client’s position under compressed deadlines.
- Successfully defeated an insurer’s motion to compel production of more than 50,000 pages of privileged communications on behalf of a nonparty insurance broker.
- Obtained summary judgment dismissing all claims against insurance broker defendants in a professional malpractice action arising from builder’s risk insurance coverage.
- Managed a nationwide arbitration program on behalf of a major insurer, coordinating litigation strategy, briefing, and dispute resolution across simultaneous matters throughout the United States.
- Defeated class certification in a putative class action against an insurer while simultaneously resolving a parallel regulatory proceeding before the Maryland Insurance Administration.
- Obtained dismissal of a statutory bad faith claim on behalf of an insurer, eliminating exposure to punitive damages, attorneys’ fees, and other extra-contractual remedies.
- Obtained summary judgment establishing that an employee/contractor exclusion barred coverage under a commercial general liability policy.
- Successfully obtained dismissal of claims seeking recovery against commercial general liability insurers arising from alleged faulty workmanship and mold damage.
- Successfully obtained dismissal of a declaratory judgment action involving additional insured coverage and third-party beneficiary claims.
- Successfully established the validity of an insurance policy cancellation at a Framed Issue Hearing, with the judgment affirmed on appeal.
- Authored a successful federal trial brief that formed the basis for dismissal of sixteen false advertising claims in complex commercial litigation.
